Disconnect the Negative Battery Cable

Once your vehicle has been checked out and all issues, if any, have been resolved, you can reset your check engine light manually should it still be lit up on your dash. Don’t worry. The process to learn how to reset a check engine light is fairly simple. Reset a check engine light in these four easy steps:

  1. Turn off your vehicle and put on safety glasses and gloves.
  2. Find the negative terminal. Usually, you will see a black cap and a negative (-) symbol that notes which terminal you are looking for.
  3. Using a wrench, loosen the nut on the negative terminal and pull the negative connector from the battery. Keep this to the side for about a minute.
  4. Reconnect the negative cable and secure it with your wrench.

Though this method often works, there are some cases where it doesn’t do the trick. If you still don’t have any luck resetting your check engine light, we have a few other options you can try before bringing your vehicle in. This can include disconnecting your battery, however, keep in mind this could reset your infotainment system.

Check Your Gas Cap

One simple, yet often overlooked, cause of the check engine light remaining on is if the gas cap is too loose. If it’s loose or cracked, the subsequent fumes can cause the check engine light to illuminate. If you’re driving in Albany, find a safe place to pull over, remove the gas cap, and secure it back in place. If the check engine light doesn’t turn off right away, try the method listed above once more.
