How to Reset the Check Engine Light

Let’s say you noticed your check engine light and visited a service center to get it fixed, but the light won’t turn off. While you can always drive back to get the help of a technician, many Latham drivers find that learning how to reset the check engine light is not too difficult. Of course, you’ll only want to perform this task assuming your car is in good working condition. But if it is, Cooley Mazda can teach you how to reset the maintenance light in your car like a pro – along with plenty more service tips at our Rensselaer facility!

Before You Begin

Before you learn how to reset the check engine light, we want to reiterate that it’s crucial to find the source of your auto problem before you get to work. That’s because the check engine light only pops on when something is wrong with your vehicle. If you want to learn how to reset the maintenance light in order to delay a costly appointment to the service center, we urge you to reconsider. The faster you address the issue, the less expensive the repair will be – especially with our service specials. But if you simply need to reset the light after a recent car appointment, we’re happy to help.

Resetting Your Light

Whether your issue was an engine malfunction or just a loose gas cap, sometimes the check engine light refuses to budge. If that’s the case for you in Troy or Albany, you can save yourself the trip back to the service center by performing the following steps:

  • Put on safety glasses and gloves.
  • Park in a well-ventilated area and turn off the ignition.
  • Look for the negative battery terminal with a black cap and a negative (-) symbol.
  • Loosen the negative terminal bolt and pull the negative cable from the battery.
  • Hold the cable away from the battery for between 30 to 60 seconds.
  • Reattach the negative cable and tighten it again with your wrench.

If you run into any problems at all, don’t hesitate to reach out to our technicians. Some drivers may need extra steps, like disconnecting the battery completely, while others might need to schedule an appointment for more in-depth troubleshooting.
